Originally established in 1776 by Spanish Colonists, San Francisco expanded rapidly following the Californian Gold Rush of 1849. Devastated by the earthquake of 1906, the city was rebuilt and today is a major tourist destination and a powerhouse of banking and commerce on the west coast of America.
