Tate Modern
With almost five million visitors each year the Tate Modern is the most visited modern art gallery in the world. The gallery opened in 2000 in the former Bankside Power Station beside the River Thames, opposite St Paul’s Cathedral. Although delayed by engineering issues, the Millennium Bridge eventually linked the Tate Modern to the City of London.
The conversion of the building was lead by architects Herzog & de Meuron, retaining the huge turbine hall, which is used for commissioned works by contemporary artists.
